Business Opportunity Information Request
BROADBAND (HI-SPEED DATA TRANSFER) OPPORTUNITIES
Companies, organizations and other entities are invited to partner with the commonwealth in using Recovery Act funds for broadband deployment projects to:
1. efficiently expand access for citizens who do not currently have broadband or wireless access in their communities, and
2. increase the utilization of existing broadband services in communities where access exists but few households or businesses are connected to the system.
The federal government will make up to $7.2 billion available nationally for broadband projects. The programs are being administered by the Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications Information Administration (NTIA) and the Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service (RUS).
Funding is being made available in two rounds for broadband infrastructure deployment, sustainable adoption initiatives, and public computer centers. More information from the NTIA and from the RUS is available on the federal broadband stimulus Web site.
Broadband Mapping & Statewide Planning
On January 12, 2010, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was awarded $2.2 million by the NTIA to collect broadband coverage data, develop a map of the state’s broadband infrastructure, plan strategies to address gaps, and identify barriers to adopting and implementing the commonwealth’s statewide broadband plan. Learn more. The online broadband map is expected to be launched this summer. Broadband data is currently being collected from broadband providers and the Commonwealth recently submitted this activity report to the NTIA. For copy of activity report, click here.
Round 1 Funding
During the first funding round, the commonwealth submitted 7 grant applications, which can be found here.
On February 18, 2010, the Governor’s Office of Administration was awarded $28.8 million from the NTIA to expand middle mile broadband infrastructure in northern Pennsylvania. To learn more, please consult the project fact sheet, the project map or contact us.
Round 2 Funding
The second round of broadband stimulus funding closed on March 15, 2010, for Sustainable Broadband Adoption and for Public Computer Center projects, and closed on March 26, 2010, for Comprehensive Community Infrastructure (CCI) requests.
The Recovery Act authorizes the NTIA to consult with states regarding the review and prioritization of projects in or affecting their state. States had 20 days to provide input to the NTIA on Round 2 BTOP grant submissions. A listing of recommended projects for Round 2 consideration was submitted by the Commonwealth to the NTIA on May 3, 2010. To view a copy of the letter, click here.
In developing grant submissions, applicants were encouraged to achieve consistency with the commonwealth’s statewide broadband plan, “A Broadband Strategy for the 21st Century: high-speed access to digital information for all Pennsylvanians.”
